92 → 71: Our Battle with Being Overweight
1. The Morning I Saw Myself in the Mirror
I was in the shower, lost in my thoughts as usual, when my eyes suddenly landed on my thighs. They were slowly starting to sag under the weight of the fat. My heart sank, and I’ll never forget that moment.
I’m not someone who lets himself go without noticing. I always used to wonder how people whose weight climbs that high don’t see it happening to themselves. And now I hadn’t seen it either! I couldn’t believe I had been turning, so slowly and quietly, into someone who gets out of breath after a few steps.
I got out of the shower, quickly got dressed, went to Omid and said: “This can’t go on.”
This is me at my heaviest, in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The scrapes on my arms and legs are from a fall while running with Art. He suddenly took off, and I didn’t let go of the leash. I ran a few steps with him until I hit a dip and the ground disappeared under my feet. I spun in the air and landed with a thud, all 92 kilos of me, on a dirt path full of stones and gravel. I was scraped up everywhere, and it hurt a lot. Now, near the end of 2026, the wounds are long gone, but the marks, especially on my leg, are still a little darker than the rest of my skin.
2. The Extra Weight I Never Felt
2023 and 2024 were incredibly busy years for Omid and me. We were working out a soap formula, helping our family around the clock, and getting used to a new studio with its own unique pipeline. We were so exhausted that we took multivitamins every day. We went out for lunch and dinner with colleagues and barely moved away from our computers. And whatever little free time we had went into making the Puyanama podcast instead of resting.
All those restaurant meals and the lack of movement did their job. Without us even feeling it, our weight had slowly crept up to 92 kilos.
3. My Feet Knew Before the Mirror Did
I have flat feet, and they were the ones that sounded the first alarm: pain caused by the extra weight. I was so naive and so busy that I thought a better pair of shoes or some fancy insoles would fix it. I spent so much time searching for insoles and orthopedic shoes! It turned out all of it was beside the point. The real problem was my weight.
I clearly remember nights when my feet hurt so much that I’d ask Omid to massage them. The funny thing is, it was only my right foot that gave me trouble.
In this video, you can see us trying to figure out what was happening in my right foot that caused so much pain. As you can see, the sole of my foot, along with its flat bone structure, presses completely against the ground, and the extra weight puts pressure on the tendons too, which led to intense pain.
That pain, together with what I had seen in the shower, finally made me take my weight seriously. We went out, bought a digital scale and weighed ourselves. We couldn’t believe it.
So many things and habits in life creep in like this, slowly, and if you’re not paying attention, one day you realize you’ve become someone else. I, for one, will never let that happen. So we didn’t wait. We got to work.
4. Winter, Cold, and the First Kilometers
We decided to take the cheapest route to losing weight. Gym memberships outside Iran are ridiculously expensive, and on top of the cost, we had no desire to spend our days and nights lifting weights or running on a treadmill in a stuffy, closed-in space.
So we bought two pairs of good sports shoes and started walking, in the first month of 2025. It was a freezing winter day, so cold that our faces went numb, but we bundled up in scarves and hats, headed out, and walked all the way from home to the city center. It was really hard, and my foot was giving me a lot of trouble, but I had made up my mind to put self-pity and touchiness aside and keep going. When we reached Jan Palach Square, we recorded a video.
In the video I say: “We’re on a morning walk. We’ve done five kilometers, with one more to go, so six in total. After that, we’ll hop on the tram and head home, and that’s today’s walk done.”
We kept this up for about ten months, even on days when we had no motivation at all and were truly exhausted. Add to that Prague’s biting cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping to minus ten, when no one else would set foot outside. But we were determined. We had decided to keep going for the sake of another goal, one we’ll reveal in the future, and losing weight mattered a lot to us. Of course, our real priority was our health and getting rid of the pain in my foot. We worked really hard, and those were truly tough, draining days.
5. The Routine That Worked
We kept up the walks every single day. As soon as we got home from work, we’d bundle up and head out. Back then, we didn’t yet walk from the office to the city center, because I had Czech classes every other day and was practicing Czech on top of that. Those were long, exhausting days, but we kept going anyway.
Along the way, we completely changed how we ate. Overnight, we cut our portions in half. We didn’t follow any diet or scientific plan; we kept eating the same food as always, just half as much. I’d made a rule for myself to always leave part of my plate empty.
The biggest change was dinner. We stopped having a full evening meal and had a big bowl of salad instead: boiled lentils, beans, celery, potatoes and beetroot, with cabbage and pickles for a bit of a sour, tangy kick, topped with a spoonful of mayonnaise and two spoonfuls of yogurt with vinegar. A salad that probably no one but Omid and me could stomach! Even now, as I write this, we still have it for dinner, with a few tweaks.
We only eat protein at lunch: chicken breast or eggs, or a little something from the meat section at the company canteen, but just enough to keep the whole meal between 150 and 200 grams. We also drink plenty of water during our walks and try to stay well hydrated all the time.
6. The Chart That Tells My Story
We always tried to weigh ourselves once a week. The scale we’d bought came with an app that saved the data on our phones and showed a graph of how our weight was going up or down. This is the chart that captures my 20-kilo weight loss perfectly: from 92 kg down to 71.7 kg in about ten months, an average of roughly two kilos a month. We worked day and night, without a break, to get to this number, and I’m so glad we never abandoned our routine.
The First Months: When the Scale Wouldn’t Budge
As you can see on the chart, the scale barely moved through December and January, only about one kilo. Our bodies were being really stubborn. But we kept going, and that persistence finally paid off. When we started to see the first changes, it sparked such excitement in us that we became even more determined. We were so happy that the scale finally moved and started showing a downward trend.
The Steep Drop: When Everything Clicked
From February to April, the curve got steep and everything clicked into place. Over those three months, we lost about three to four kilos a month, going from around 90 kg down to around 80. We’d gotten more comfortable with the new way of eating, and our bodies were gradually responding to the pressure and adapting to our stubbornness! Because there was no way we were giving up.
Every Kilo Harder Than the Last
From May onward, the weight loss slowed down. We were still losing, but not at the same pace. The lighter we got, the harder each kilo became to lose. Even so, by around July I had dropped below 73 kg.
Finding Balance
By July 2025, the chart had almost flattened out, and from July to September I lost only about one more kilo. But we kept going. By then, we had also increased our walking distance, from six kilometers to more than nine, and sometimes as many as twelve, which felt amazing. It was no longer just about losing weight; we were holding on to the body we had worked so hard for.
7. The Days I Wanted to Quit
There were days I wanted to give up. All the extra weight that had built up in me over the years was now pressing down on me, both physically and mentally. To a passerby or a colleague, nothing special had happened. They saw me as the same person as always, and to them, gaining a little weight wasn’t a big deal. But inside me, there was a storm.
Sometimes I ran out of steam, especially on the coldest, darkest winter days. After a full day in front of computers at the office, with all that mental and eye strain, going out for a walk felt like an impossible mission. But Omid and I kept talking about the results we’d already achieved, and we held on to the power of consistency, to the extraordinary results that sticking with something can bring.
We’d get home, and dinner was just a bowl of salad. At bedtime, hunger kept us up; we’d get up, eat a carrot or two, sometimes a bite of cheese, and go back to sleep. But we didn’t give up, and eventually our bodies and minds adjusted to the new routine.
8. Twenty Kilos Later
When I got down to 79 kg, one day, to my complete surprise, I realized the pain in my foot was gone. We were walking the same distances as always, but I was no longer limping by the end of the route. I was over the moon that the pain had faded away. I couldn’t believe I was finally getting to feel this.
I also had a lot more energy. At work especially, I wasn’t tired or yawning anymore, and since I was eating a light lunch, I didn’t get sleepy in the afternoon. I felt more productive and more focused. I felt so light.
When I hit 71 kg, one of my colleagues turned to me and said, “Come on, we still need you guys, you’re about to turn invisible!” That made me really happy. Some of our colleagues had also started paying more attention to their food and activity, and it was Omid and I who had sparked that positive change, especially because we stuck with it. Everyone at the company knew we walked everywhere and had lost a lot of weight. But whenever we said twenty kilos, they couldn’t believe it, until we showed them this chart.
The worst part of being overweight was going from medium to large and extra-large clothes and not being able to wear my old clothes anymore. Now I was back in those same clothes. It was as if I had found the old Tohid again and given him a big hug. It was a very special, wonderful feeling.
The blue dashed line you see on the chart sits at around 75 kg, the number that was my goal. Around June 2025, I finally crossed it. I remember seeing the number on the scale and not believing it. I was seventeen kilos away from where I had started, and I had passed a goal that once seemed so far away. But we didn’t stop there. We kept going until I reached 71.7 kg.
There was another change that people rarely talk about, but it mattered a lot to us: our digestive health. Back in our restaurant-heavy days, we constantly dealt with diarrhea and loose stools. That’s a thing of the past now. Our stools are well-formed and normal, going to the bathroom is easy, and overall our gut feels much healthier.
A big part of this is probably thanks to that nightly salad. The lentils, beans, potatoes and vegetables we eat every evening are packed with fiber. According to Mayo Clinic, fiber soaks up water and bulks up stool, which is why it can help firm up loose, watery stools. Some types of fiber also feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut, and legumes such as beans, peas and lentils are among the best sources of fiber. All the water we drank on our walks helped too, since fiber does its job best when it has enough water to absorb.

“Two Years Later”
Now, almost two years after that freezing winter day, I’ve kept my weight as steady as I could, but to be honest, I’m back at 75 kg, right on that same blue dashed line. Some might see that as failure, but I don’t. I’m still seventeen kilos lighter than the day I saw myself in the shower, the pain in my foot hasn’t come back, and we still walk and still eat that strange salad every night. I’ve learned that losing weight is a sprint, but keeping it off is a marathon that never ends.
This is one of the salads we used to eat back then. We still have salads like this every night, and sometimes we get creative and switch things up a little. Every now and then, we also cook some chicken liver in the air fryer and have it after the salad.
This is a historic video for me
This video shows my brother Omid and me on a freezing winter day. After work, we bundled up in scarves and hats and headed out for our walk. We recorded it to celebrate one full month of walking without missing a single day. In the video, we say:
Tohid: “Walking, month one. Done today. One month of walking, every single day.”
Omid: “In the snow.”
Tohid: “Six to seven kilometers, every day.”

In this video, you can see us trying to figure out what was happening in my right foot that caused so much pain. As you can see, the sole of my foot, along with its flat bone structure, presses completely against the ground, and the extra weight puts pressure on the tendons too, which led to intense pain.
